Benign soft tissue tumours: Anorectal leiomyomas
Abstract
Anorectal leiomyomas are a rare benign soft tissue tumour with an estimated prevalence of < 0.1% of all anorectal neoplasms. Leiomyomas should not be confused with gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) and leiomyo-sarcomas as the prognoses for these is very different. If left untreated, leiomyomas have the potential to turn malignant. Therefore, correct diagnosis, staging and management are paramount to ensure that patients receive the correct treatment. If managed correctly, these patients have a good prognosis and are able to maintain a high quality of life.
