Abstract
Bowel dysfunction and faecal incontinence negatively impact quality of life. It may be an indication of a more serious underlying condition or it may be a condition itself. Nurses are in a unique position to have conversations with patients about these embarrassing conditions. Before any nursing strategies are introduced it is important that patients are screened by a medical officer. Once cleared, nursing strategies initially focus on four non‑surgical categories - dietary interventions, lifestyle modifications, bowel education and the use of medications. If these strategies fail, it is important to encourage your patient to seek other assistance as these are just first‑line strategies.
