Abstract

Cycling is a complex and demanding sport with performance being influenced by a wide range of physical, physiological, biomechanical and psychological factors. While performance is understandably best assessed in real world competition or field settings, laboratory testing can be important in various aspects of athlete development and training optimization. Indeed, the laboratory offers a stable environment in order to not only monitor performance but also utilize specialized equipment, which can provide additional information on the mechanisms underlying an athlete’s exercise capacity. Laboratory testing therefore allows us to determine the specific factors limiting cycling performance and thus provide athletes and coaches with a greater understanding of how to maximize strengths and address weaknesses.
