Abstract

In the life of an athlete, and cyclists are no different, training accompanies and characterizes the person’s entire career, from youth to adulthood. Indeed, a good longitudinal training strategy is, together with a few other fundamental aspects described in this book, what takes a young cyclist from the playground to the Olympic Games. Training does not only referred to what is done on the bike. Instead, best- practice long-term athlete development needs to consider several areas, including but not limited, to resistance training, skill acquisition, psychology, nutrition, the athlete’s education and self-maintenance habits. This chapter focuses on the longitudinal training strategies that are important to supporting the development of the young cyclist.
