Abstract

In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an indoor optical wireless communication system with over 1-Gb/s data transmission, for both downlink and uplink. A low-cost vertical cavity surface emitting laser with limited modulation bandwidth is used as the uplink light source, and it is directly modulated with the carrierless-amplitude-phase (CAP) format; 1 Gb/s (4-CAP), 1.5 Gb/s (8-CAP), and 2 Gb/s (16-CAP) uplink transmissions are achieved and the results demonstrate a receiver sensitivity better than -17 dBm (at a bit error rate of 10-3). In addition, the tradeoff between the bit rate and the system performance in terms of receiver sensitivity and beam coverage area is investigated. © 2015 IEEE.
