Abstract

The north Flinders Ranges and surrounding region are the home of the Adnyamathanha, who refer to themselves as Yura. The Adnyamathanha comprise a number of separate groups, which include Kuyani, Pirlatapa, Wailpi and Yadliyawara. These groups were traditionally closely related, with a long history of intermarriage, co-residence and joint ceremonial activities. They were matrilineal societies with a two-moiety marriage system. This chapter focuses on the northern ranges, although many present day Adnyamathanha live further afield including Hawker, Port Augusta, Port Pirie, Whyalla and Adelaide
