Evaluating An Online Numeracy Tutorial Program For Use With Journalism Students
Abstract
Recent enthusiasm about data journalism and growing pressure from governments for universities to benchmark achievement against international literacy and numeracy standards is focusing attention on how general numeracy is taught in tertiary journalism courses. This paper presents the results of a six-week trial of a proprietary online tutorial program completed by a journalism class in 2013. The test found that the program (in learning mode) worked, but that students would have spent more time with it, and achieved greater improvement, if the content was more clearly identified as being relevant to media work.
