Abstract
Leonard Bernstein is one of the towering figures of twentieth-century music. A brilliant and versatile composer, a revolutionary and thought-provoking conductor, and a personable and insightful educator, ‘Lenny’ broke down barriers between genres and brought classical music to the world – and the world to classical music. Released to coincide with his 100th birthday on 25 August 2018, the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and conductor Benjamin Northey celebrate the life of this towering talent with an album showcasing his work for Broadway, film and concert stage. Including highlights from his ground-breaking musical West Side Story and his score to the legendary Marlon Brando film On The Waterfront, as well as the overture from his opera Candide and excerpts from On The Town, this release presents a musical portrait of one of the most important musicians of our time.
