A stakeholder approach to Environmental Management Systems (EMS) - a cross-national view

Abstract

A global lack of uptake of Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) continues to restrict the engagement of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in reducing their environmental impact. There has been considerable research completed on EMS barriers to implementation for SMEs with both industry and organisational barriers identified. However, gaps in the literature are the limited research to identify solutions or consider the perspective of key stakeholders. Moreover, there has been insufficient attention paid to how effectively an EMS is used by SMEs in order to communicate with stakeholders. Subsequently, this research will address these gaps by researching samples across two countries to obtain a more global picture of what is happening.
