Abstract

This project constituted a series of musical recitals of early 19C guitar music performed on period instruments. It explored two conceits of Romanticism epitomised by R. Schumann’s literary alter egos, Eusebius the dreamer and Florestan the revolutionary. Fresh interpretations of rare 19th century guitar works were created through the application of recent thinking in historically-informed performance practice, in works by Diabelli, Arcas, Mertz, de Fossa, and others, as well as the application of an innovative process of exegetical analysis.
