Research Statement

Research Background

What can be learnt from a series of percussion-led interrogations, within a set of creative limitations? Extending the work of performance artists Thea Rossen and Alan Lamb, White’s research interrogated a performative response to current environmental, social and geopolitical challenges.

Research Contribution

Contribution to knowledge is located in 12 world premieres of new works for percussion, adopting innovative cross-genre collaborations, and a novel approach to performance practice. White’s role encompassed the conception, commissioning, composition, curation and artistic direction of the entire series. Subsequent research questions helped guide the interrogation: 1. Can percussion music and ‘found instruments’ illuminate aspects of the climate crisis? Using instruments made of water and earth, 'Percussion Planet' interrogated aspects of the Earth in crisis. 2. What is the musical potential of a 45m steel ‘found environmental instrument? 'Gin Gin Tonic' was a video recording of an original new work, performed with hammers upon the steel structure of the 'Leaning Tower of Gin Gin'. 3. With environmental crises increasingly driving geo-political turmoil, can musicians encourage international collaboration and activate social justice? In 'Hit Parade' and 'Garden of Earthly Delights', cross-cultural communities from Australia, Persia, Africa and the USA explored novel collaborations, environmental themes and sonic solutions.

Research Significance

White’s research led to his invitations to host Percussion Australia’s ‘BOOM!’ international percussion festival in Sept 2024; to perform in the 2024 Armadale Arts Festival; to present 12 new music concerts in 2024; and to perform in China in May 2024. The performance videos gained world-wide exposure through Youtube and Facebook. A research-informed DVD of the performance, designed for mass circulation, is in production.
