Research Background

This live music performance streaming over the Internet asks, how can the latency generated by real timeInternet performance be engaged with as a creative performance tool? Decibel were invited to perform in a live streaming concert of two compositions created specifically for multi- location online performance where latency is present. Together with Swedish ensemble Norbotten Neo and New York ensemble Mis-EN, world premieres of works by Lind ‘Embracing Distance’ and Hope’s ‘The Rupture Exists’, as well as Hope’s ‘Wanderlust’ (2017) were streamed live on YouTube.

Research Contribution

This is an interdisciplinary project involving music performance and software development. performers developed new approaches to performance via software programming (on MaxMSP with AudioMovers for latency regulation, the Decibel ScorePlayer to synchronise scores remotely and Sonobus to manage video inputs) and its engagement in the two works using a practice led approach. Performers adapted to live environments where latency was applied and controlled between performers. This impacted the understanding of timing in works, and resulted in research outcomes that include new ways of expressing the relationship between latency and acoustics by changing rooms, altering the distance from microphones, and development of new playing techniques presented in realtime.

Research Significance

COVID 19 created the need to find new ways to play music whilst being far apart. This project is unique in that the performers develop new tecniques to engage with compositions that embrace and work with the latency that is part of even the fastest Internet connection, across three continents. The concert has 702 unique viewers to date, including the live performance. A paper abstract examing the project has been submitted for Contemporary Music Review (Q2).
