Research Statement

Research Background

Publishers (Astute Music,Saxtet,JW Pepper) produce sax ensemble works for specific ability ranges (Level A–E; ‘Easy’ to ‘Collegiate’). While prescribed ‘gradings’ enable educators to choose appropriate, these works can be restrictive, where multi-levelled participation is not encouraged. As musical director for the WAAPA Massed Sax festival that involved players of all ages, I asked the question; how can an existing work be adapted to include multiple levels of playing ability (beginner to advanced), resulting a performance that maintains the ‘spirit’ of the original work?

Research Contribution

Starting with the premise that works needed to be chosen for their adaptability & their ‘understandability’, the combination of three underpinnings best answered the research question.1. Repertoire choice: was enjoyable, energetic and well known 2.The work had to lend itself to multiple versions of parts being created3. Referencing JC Easton’s “writing for saxophone” (2006) provided research-based arranging techniques (textural sounds, rhythmic effects) AC/DC’s “Long Way to the Top” was chosen as it not only adaptable, but also readily ‘understandable’ by all ages. Whilst simplistic in its composition, this work lent itself to having multiple versions of parts where ‘easier’ parts were restricted to simplistic rhythms, shorter phrase and a smaller playing range.

Research Significance

This arrangement transcended traditional grading restrictions established by music publishers, allowing for a greater number and variety of levels to perform in the same ensemble. This was achieved through the formulation of an arrangement technique that allowed beginners to play side-by-side with advanced players, giving them an enriched, pedagogically supported experience. Further, this ‘formula’ is one that can aid future composers, arrangers and educators in created the ‘unrestricted’ saxophone ensemble.
