Research Background
‘Reframed Horizons’ is an invitational solo exhibition for Fringe World 2026, showcasing Panizza Allmark’s innovative global practice of photographie féminine, a dynamic feminist photographic response to the environment. Her documentary photography engages with the Freudian unsettling notion of the uncanny – the familiar and unfamiliar, the real and the representational in diverse cites in the Global North and Global South. The exhibition consists of three interrelated photographic series: ‘Petals and Pavements:City Reflections’, ‘Double Take:Double Entendres’ and ‘Venezia Vistas’ across three gallery spaces, in which the familiar landscapes are transformed into sites of tension and ambiguity, through capturing disparate juxtapositions.
Research Contribution
From across fifteen cities across the world, the large-scaled substantial photographic work critically examines neoliberalism through interrelated themes of environmentalism, migration, militarization, capitalism and gender. Through photographie féminine the work creates dialectical images that creatively bring political realities to light, revealing what often goes unnoticed in everyday life. It is about questioning and resistance. Through this innovative photographic approach and display the interrelated scenes invite us to see differently, to see global connections, thus creating a space for renewed attention and engagement.
Research Significance
The exhibition was competitively selected by Ellenbrook Arts to represent the gallery at Fringe World and was recognised by major media outlets, including The West Australian and Perth Now, as being one of the top six shows to attend out of approximately 600 events at Fringe World 2026. The catalogue features an essay by art critic Dr Theo Costantino, Director of Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery. The exhibition included an artist talk and was selected for presentation at the Head on Photo Festival, Australia’s international photography festival.
