Research Statement

Research Background

“#FEAS Unfinished Business” was an exhibition that featured 13 women-identifying Australian artists and artist-scholars including First Nations, Trans, and Queer artists such as Natalie Harkin, Jo Darbyshire, and Sage J Harlow, together with #FEAS (Feminist Educators Against Sexism) archive of participatory projects and artefacts (zines/toolkits/videos). The research asked, “how might curatorial practice be a catalyst for a multi-arts forum into the role of feminist activism today in the disrupting of pervasive white patriarchal heteronormative narratives”. The exhibition included videos of “The #FEAS Report” (2021), and “Wheel of (mis)fortune” (2022).

Research Contribution

“#FEAS Unfinished Business” curatorial methodology drew on the methods of feminist, artist-led research (Mountz, 2015, Zoble, 2009) demonstrating a synthesis of activism and artwork across disciplinary fields. By foregrounding diverse perspectives with the lineage and creative archive of #FEAS presented together for the first time, knowledge-making was collective which made visible and advanced feminist and practice-led methodologies with attention to the affective, embodied, and relational dimensions of research. The exhibition featured mixed-media work (video/installation/fine art/photography, text-based work and textiles) from emerging to established artists.

Research Significance

Reviewed in Seesaw Magazine as “strangely comforting in these dark times.” It attracted hundreds of visitors including the AGWA acquisition team and Lee Kinsella from The Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art. It was featured on RTR FM. ‘The #FEAS Report’ (video) was commissioned by the Comparative International Education Society and premiered as the opening act for the 65th Annual Conference, Social Responsibility within Changing Contexts, Seattle, Washington, April 25-29th 2021. ‘#FEAS Wheel of Fortune(mis)fortune’ premiered to a sold-out audience on June 10-11, 2022 at PICA.
