Research Background
Dr Jeanell Carrigan has driven the research discovering, editing and recording the works of Australian-Dutch composer Meta Overman. Tonya Lemoh has collaborated as piano duo partner on a previous recording made in 2019 prior to this release of the piano concerto allowing for a particular simpatico sensitivity needed for duets for piano. The piano concerto is a major work by a significant Australian female composer, and this edition of the score includes a commercial recording of the work for two pianos, with pianists Jeanell Carrigan and Tonya Lemoh. The role of duo pianist is essential to the interpretation and execution of any composition for two pianos. Lemoh was selected on the basis of her track record in research into 20th century Australian piano music, where she specialised in the music of composer Raymond Hanson. Her understanding of the technical and stylistic requirements of this repertoire contributes significantly to the interpretation of Overman’s work.
Research Contribution
This CD is the only existing recording of the work to date, and as such has made a substantial contribution to new knowledge about this important composer, as well as expanding the cultural parameters of 20th century Australian music history. As a major addition to the concerto repertoire, it also has valuable artistic potential for Australian performing musicians and musicologists.
Research Significance
The score and CD have been released on the Wirripang label, which specialises in the publishing and dissemination of Australian classical music. It has also been selected for archiving by several leading libraries and internet platforms for classical music, including the National Library of Australia, Penn State University Library, the Australian Music Centre and Wirripang’s australiancomposers.com.au.
