Abstract

This research explores how children living with a parent with an acquired brain injury (ABI) experience a lack of understanding and support, by investigating how systems influence support for children. A single case study of an adult who as a child lived with parental ABI finds that she was silenced by discourses of adult-child relations and nuclear family roles, which meant that her experience was overlooked, and she was left unsupported and without information on ABI. This study informs methodologies for future research on silence and children, adds to the growing body of ABI research, and informs ways of supporting ABI families.
