Abstract
Italian guitarist Angelo Gilardino (1941-2022) is a well-known international figure, yet the extent of his compositional output is commonly overlooked. This research outlines the depth of his compositional oeuvre, especially his sonatas. Two Mediterranean-themed sonatas are chosen as case studies that demonstrate a mature post-tonal harmonic language combined with Neo-classical impetus. Their programmatic foundation highlights the geopolitical significance of the region, harnessing a web of inter-textual references and conceits—such as the notion of the ‘river’ as harbinger of identity and narrative. The hermeneutic analyses inform a performance interpretation and highlight the significance of their artistic contribution.
