Abstract

Was it merely coincidence that the two women who were first elected to the Federal Parliament, were teachers? Dame Enid Lyons the first woman member of the House of Representatives, had previously been a teacher in the Tasmanian Education Departme nt, while Senator D. M. Tangney who was the first womo.n Senator, taught for many yenra 1n West Australian schools. Had the lessons of community welfare in the classrooms opened to them wider horizons and a greater consciousness of what women could achieve in the broader fields of politics? In the case of Senator Tangney this is undoubtably true, as the whole of her life and work as a teacher seems to have been one long preparation for her ultimate objective.
