"I am old and ignorant. But I am not so ignorant that I don't know the importance of education. Outside there is education. Here we have nothing. With education there is hope for the children. I have not much money. If I had more I would give you more." (Tibetan Kharnang nomad making a donation for Gesar Sherab School, July 2004)

The Tibetan people of the Kharnang community live on the South Eastern corner of the Tibetan plateau. Approximately 500 families, their traditional nomadic existence traverses an area of around 23,000 square kilometres. This land is located across conutries comprising the Yushu prefecture of Qinghai province, one of the poorest and most isolated areas of the People's Republic of China.
