Abstract
Bhutan's educational paradigm has long been dominated by a traditional schooling system, sidelining the potential of alternative education pathways. Despite acknowledgment of its benefits, alternative education remains underexplored, with even the recent reform initiatives focusing primarily on superficial changes within the existing system. In contrast, Western societies such as Australia are increasingly adopting alternative schooling practices for their children. This paper explores Bhutan's potential to establish itself as a unique global hub for alternative education, leveraging its cultural, natural, and well-being assets. Drawing insights from Think Global School, The Traveling School, and The Outdoor Education Group, coupled with the reflective narratives of two Australian teenagers who spent six months in Bhutan and findings from Australian community-based education research, this discussion highlights the transformative impact of immersive, place-based educational experiences. The paper argues that Bhutan can leverage its cultural and environmental richness to create a distinct educational niche that complements its vision for Gelephu Mindfulness City and positions the nation as a beacon of innovative, holistic learning experiences. This shift would not only contribute to student well-being and growth but also redefine Bhutan’s role on the global educational landscape by integrating education with community, culture and environmental stewardship.
