This review provides an overview of alcohol use among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples using the latest research available. It has been designed to update the evidence published since the previous review conducted in 2018 on this topic (Review of the harmful use of alcohol among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by Prof Dennis Gray, Dr Annalee Stearne and colleagues) (Gray et al., 2018).

In this updated review, we discuss the historical context and scope of alcohol use among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, impacts on individuals and whole communities, relevant national policies and strategies, present an overview of efforts to address alcohol use and finally, future directions—self-determination, Indigenous data sovereignty and the need for a holistic approach to ‘treatment’.
