Abstract
Transitions in higher education encompass a wider set of experiences. Transitions are multifaceted in nature in the context of higher education and extend beyond the traditional focus solely on students. In light of recent changes and a growing recognition that academics and professional staff also face challenges to wellbeing during transition, in this chapter we draw on the evolving challenges discussing the broader context of relational, personal, physical, emotional, spiritual, economical, and technological changes shaping higher education, leading to tensions for academics and a need for self-care. We introduce a diverse range of transitions in higher education and illuminate experiences of encountering transitions that require reshaping of identity, taking new paths and opportunities, and illuminating some hidden spaces not often talked about in academia. By sharing personal stories and experiences, this chapter and edited book aim to foster support and encourage students, professionals, and researchers to strengthen their own wellbeing in academic interactions. It also calls for creating networks of knowledge where academics can share their experiences and strategies to build strong and diverse academic communities focused on the wellbeing of all.
