Abstract

The Overview of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health status 2024 (Overview) aims to provide a comprehensive outline of the current health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The early sections of the Overview present information about the social and cultural context of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, social determinants, the structure of the population, and measures of population health including births, deaths and hospitalisations.

The remaining sections of the Overview consist of selected health conditions and risk/protective factors that contribute to the overall health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. These sections include a brief introduction and evidence of the extent of the condition or risk/protective factor and burden of disease. Information is provided for states and territories, Indigenous Regions and remoteness, and for demographics such as sex and age, when the information is available.

For readers interested in historical health data for selected health conditions, these data are available in previous editions of the Overview.

The Overview is a key element of the Australian Indigenous HealthInfoNet’s commitment to authentic and engaged knowledge development and exchange. In this edition we aim to strengthen our commitment to accurately and authentically represent the data and statistics that impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities. With this in mind we have applied the principles of the Maiam nayri Wingara Indigenous Data Sovereignty Collective to the Overview.

The Overview is a resource relevant for the health workforce, students and others requiring access to up-to-date information about the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
