Abstract

The use of different post-processing methods to improve the microstructure and properties of titanium matrix composites (TMCs) manufactured by additive manufacturing has always been of concern to many researchers. Electroshock treatment (EST) as a novel method was used to modify microstructure and mechanical properties of the TMC of TiC/Ti-6Al-4V manufactured by laser melting deposition (LMD). The results the α phase grains were refined after 0.08 s EST and the microstructure transformed from a Widmanstatten structure to a basketweave structure. The results of tensile properties revealed that the elongation increased from 4.9 % (untreated) to 5.2 % after 0.04 s EST, the fracture morphology analysis showed that ductile fracture became predominant with some residual brittle fractures existed as EST time increased. The results of in-situ tensile test indicated that the emergence of crack bridges hindered crack extension after EST, which enhancing the toughness of TMC. All results show that EST is an effective method for optimizing the microstructure and improving the mechanical performances of LMD TiC/Ti-6Al-4V, providing a novel post-treatment method for LMD TMCs.
