Abstract

This study addresses how the aviation sector can create value by fostering innovation in collaboration with start-ups. A novel ‘Key-Success Factors in Aviation-Start-up Collaboration Framework’ is proposed to explain the innovation process, identify key success factors, and generate valuable insights into the aviation sector and start-up partnerships. Drawing on 31 of 80 consolidated key success factors selected from the literature and validated through ten interviews with managers of aviation innovation programs and start-up founders, the proposed framework is structured into three dimensions: (i) antecedents, (ii) governance, support, and development, and (iii) innovation and value creation, and 13 related categories. The data were analyzed with IRaMuTeQ software using a text-based descending hierarchical classification and similarity analysis. Empirical evidence from cases and interviews involved worldwide programs, such as Hangar 51 (IAGi) by International Airlines Group, Plug and Play Travel & Hospitality, Embraer, and JetBlue Ventures (SKY VC). The analysis reveals key success factors for collaborations between the aviation industry and start-ups that drive innovation and value creation. The findings indicate that a successful partnership framework is achievable when open communication is employed and the strategic vision and value propositions of all stakeholders are aligned. Technological advancements have prompted the aviation sector to explore new approaches to innovation and value creation. A promising approach is collaborating with start-ups. However, research on the role of start-ups collaborating with the aviation industry in driving innovation is lacking. This study explores how the aviation sector can successfully co-create or foster innovations with start-ups to drive value creation, thereby contributing to both research and practice.
