Research Statement

Research Background

What are new ways music compositions can engage with latency created in trans continental Internet performance? These music compositions are designed for live telematic performance over the Internet. The compositions embrace – rather than resist - the latency typical in live Internet performance, aiming to create new musical materials and performance experiences. They were commissioned for two high profile live streaming events, and were created to enable multiple contributors from between 3 and 10 locations to participate in a composition where latency was accommodated in new forms of compositional structures.

Research Contribution

This compositions are multimedia explorations that involve not only musicians (The Rupture Exists) but writers, video artists and dancers (Nomadic Subjects). They innovate telematic performance in the way the works score latency into the animated (moving, digital) notations, using the capacity of the Decibel ScorePlayer iPad App to synchronise scores playing in remote locations over the Internet. This creates more flexible frameworks for improvisation within a composed framework, creating innovative score paradigms and new knowledge in the field of music composition.

Research Significance

Nomadic Subjects was commissioned by Ars Electronica, Austria the leading electronic music festival in the world. Chicks on Speed, an experimental performance art group based in Berlin, Germany instigated the commission and performed the work in the festival alongside other national collaborators. Nomadic Subjects performance mixed live streaming contributions and live performance at the Kepler Gardens, in Austria. Rupture Exists premiered at Goetenberg Art Sounds Festival in Sweden, performed by members of Decibel (AUS), Neo Norbotten (Sweden) and MisEN (USA). Both streamed live on YouTube (702 unique views to date). The research impacts the field in its unique ways of addressing telematic performance via animated notation.
