Research Background

This research posits that disability arts methodologies in transcultural contexts are under-theorised, particularly the dramaturgies of collaborative training that operate across access difference. Such training works with difference rather than smoothing it away. This project sits inside a long-running program of Korean–Australian performance practice utilising the I-You-We framework (co-developed with Park Younghee and Tak Hoyoung over more than a decade; theorised in Neideck, 2019) which asked how non-hierarchical performer training can support brave-rather-than-safe collaborative space (Arao & Clemens). This project extended the enquiry by asking: how does the framework operate when delivered as an international exchange workshop series with a Korean disability arts cohort?

Research Contribution

I.YOU.WE 2024 is the first iteration of the I-You-We framework delivered under formal partnership with a national disability arts body, the Korea Disability Arts & Culture Center (KDAC). The methodology was adapted to artists with mobility, sensory, and neurodiverse access needs, working bilingually. Documentation across the eight-session structure (online orientation; I / You / We phases; public Open Studio showing) records how the framework’s reflective rituals (Ding Dong; Golden Moments) operate across access difference. The development is articulated in the co-presented Arts in Society 2024 paper (Stoneham, McKeague, Park, Neideck).

Research Significance

Commissioned by KDAC as the international exchange strand of the i-Eum Creative Academy 2024, with 15 participants selected from 41 applicants. The public Open Studio (19 December 2024, Seoul) disseminated the work, and the published i-Eum Creative Academy 2024 Outcomes Report (108pp, KDAC) is its public record, its evaluation symposium identifying inclusive collaborative performance making, flexible structure supporting participant-led ideas, and process-over-result reflection.
